THE “WOMENS’ Resource Centre” (WRC), Dorset Street, has been picketed regularly throughout August by Choice Ireland and supporters. Funnily enough, this organisation that likes to pose as above-board and legitimate, has decided to change its name in the past number of weeks to “Abbey Counselling Centre” due to the bad publicity the pickets have engendered.

If you would like to set up a branch of SY in your area if there isn
Socialist Youth has set up a new branch in Newry and Mourne. We held our first meeting on ‘Why you should be a Socialist’ which was attended by young people from the Newry area and some members from Belfast. We are only in the early stages of setting up the branch but lots of people are already definitely interested in getting involved.
By Michael Vallely, Newry Socialist Youth
For young people in Newry there are many problems, such as anti-social behaviour, racism and low pay. If you go out any weekend in Newry, the sheer numbers of underage drinkers is staggering. With this underage drinking comes the binge mentality; that you are only having fun if you are drunk. We want to provide an alternative for young people to campaign for better services and facilities and to fight for decent jobs and wages.

When Cindy Sheehan’s son, Army Spec. Casey Sheehan, was killed in Iraq in 2004, she quickly became one of the country’s most high-profile antiwar activists. Sheehan camped out near George Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, demanding an explanation for her son’s death.
Now the 51-year-old mother of three is running for Congress against Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as an independent anti-war, pro-worker challenger. Justice, paper of Socialist Alternative (CWI US), spoke with Sheehan in her San Francisco campaign office, just days after her supporters turned in over 20,000 signatures to qualify her for the ballot.

The biggest demo Codnor has seen in recent years marched towards the BNPs Red White and Blue Festival (RWB) on Saturday August 16th. Trade Union banners and flags mixed with placards as over 500 marched to the bottom of Codnor Denby Lane, site of the festival.
By a Notts anti fascist
The day of protest represented the culmination of months of activity by the campaign network of Stop the BNP and anti fascist groups in the East Midlands. This campaign put out around 40,000 leaflets, played a key role in preventing Amber Valley Council granting the BNP a music and alcohol licence, and took the initiative in calling for a mobilisation against the BNP’s festival, a call which was taken up widely including by the trade unions, Unite Against Fascism (UAF) and others.
