Today Barratts & Priceless shoe shop chain have announced further fears of the chain closing down. This puts 230 jobs under threat across 20 branches in Northern Ireland. Socialist Youth will be holding a day of action tomorrow to discuss with workers in Barratts about fighting back to defend jobs.

After the closures of Zavvi, Woolworths and many other local shops many young people have been thrown onto the dole. Instead there is a huge demand in society for useful jobs. Everything from building social housing for the 38,000 people on the housing waiting list to a programme of social caring in the communities would provide jobs for young people out of work.

In areas like Magherafelt or Ballymena were unemployment has skyrocketed in recent months many more young people leaving school or technical colleges will not be able to find work. There is no future for young people here while this system is making ordinary people pay for its own failings.
